Abstract Description

BACKGROUND: There is a clear and present increase in the visibility, promotion of, and engagement in women’s sport. At the same time there is increased coverage and appreciation of the challenges experienced by female athletes, which are considered to be a consequence of a historical gender gap in sport science and sport medicine. PURPOSE: Despite currently observing a welcome, exponential rise in female specific research and innovation activities there remains an often vocalised call for “science and medicine to do more”. Whilst we, in the science and medicine community, may accept this sentiment, it raises an important question about responsibility – should the progress of research and innovation in female sport be solely the responsibility of scientists and clinicians? This talk will seek athlete, organisation leader, scientist, clinician, and journalist opinion to explore the responsibility that each has in the progression of female athlete health and performance support. We will consider accountabilities for appropriate funding and resource, athlete engagement, the translation of impactful information and the public promotion of positive vs. negative media coverage in elite female sport. The discussion will explore the concept of collective responsibility, with the aim of developing alignment between all stakeholders to help future proof the progress being made in female athlete science and medicine.
